Post-punk, math, forse noise è la musica strumentale
dei Captain Quentin, nati in provincia di Reggio Calabria nell'autunno
del 2005, fondendo nel nome il deviato Captain Beefheart ed
il Quentin de "l'urlo e il furore" di William Faulkner.
Un EP manifesto di due brani ("My Untitled EP", autopr.
2006) e poi l'esordio vero e proprio con "Certe Cose Determinate"
registrato in analogico al Red House Recordings Studio di Senigallia
(AN). 8 brani, 40 minuti di musica per un album che, appena
uscito, ha subito ottenuto recensioni positive dalla stampa
e dalle webzine specializzate, ottimi feedback da radio americane
e francesi, e che da luglio'08 è distribuito in spagna
dalla Discos Buen Pony. Dopo due anni di piena attività
live in lungo e in largo per la penisola, a giugno 2010 la band
da inizio alle registrazioni del secondo album in studio, scegliendo
come produttore artistico Fabio Magistrali, guru delle migliori
produzioni nostrane degli anni 90 e 2000. La realizzazione del
disco avviene durante una settimana di full immersion nella
quiete delle campagne salentine, il risultato è un album
di 9 tracce di musica dalle strutture matematiche, ritmi afro,
ripartenze prog e una forte componente synth-pop. “Instrumental
Jet Set”, questo il titolo, è previsto in uscita
per Febbraio 2011 su FromScratch records.
Captain Quentin’s music can be described as post-punk,
math, or perhaps even noise. The band, whose name is a combination
of the aberrant Captain Beefheart and Quentin from William Faulkner’s
“The Sound and the Fury,” got together in the fall
of 2005, in the province of Reggio Calabria. An EP containing
two tracks (“My Untitled EP,” self-produced in 2006)
was followed by their full-fledged debut “Certe Cose Determinate.”
Both were analogically recorded at Red House Recording Studio
in Senigallia (AN). The album (8 tracks/40 minutes of music)
got positive reviews by the press and industry webzines as soon
as it was released, and received outstanding feedback from both
French and American radios. It was distributed in Spain by Discos
Buen Pony. After two years of live gigs all over the peninsula,
the band started recording their second in-studio album in June
2010. The artistic production was assigned to guru Fabio Magistrali,
the man behind the best Italian productions of the 90’s
and onwards. The album was recorded in one week, amidst the
quiet countryside of Salento. The result? An album containing
9 tracks of mathematically structured music with afro rhythms,
prog elements, and a strong synth-pop component. “Instrumental
Jet Set” is due to be released in February 2011, on the
FromScratch Records label.
